Today at work I found out it is almost a certainty that the island - our home of only five months - will be evacuated ahead of Rita.
Coming from West Texas, I'm plenty familiar with dust storms. But hurricanes? What do I do? Tuesday night the mayor should decide whether to call a mandatory evacuation, and Wednesday morning I'll find out from the paper what inland destination they've picked for us to set up temporary shop. They told me to pack like I was going on a long trip. Well, I'm thinking on this long trip I will want my good dishes, all my scrapbooks and the furniture we just bought. I've never looked around the house to decide what I must have and what I can risk losing. It's all just pretty surreal.

I've been thinking about you every time I see anything about Rita. Please be safe. I would want to take my dishes with me too. How sad! But I'm sure the pugs are at the top of the list with Alan following shortly after.
We've been through five major hurricanes in ten years over here. This is what I aways take: My pictures, jewelry, any important old family pieces that can fit in your car among humans and dogs. I packed a lot of clothes and then what I didn't pack, I tried to put plastic bags over the ones that I needed to stay dry in case the roof leaked. I packed up china out of the china cabinet and took all decorative items off the tables and put them down on the floor or in cabinets in case the windows broke and the wind came in, it might keep things from flying around. Now we started boarding up the windows which helped a lot. If the wind hits the doors or windows for a long time at that speed, it warps the way they close and will never be the same. I would also empty the freezer and refrigerator of all MEAT. It will spoil if the power goes out and you never know how long it will be before they let you back over to an Island because they have to inspect the bridges before they let you back on...at least here that's how it works. That spoiled meat will smell bad and get magots. I would fill up the bathtub with water so that you'll have something to flush the toilets with in case the water is cutoff...like what happened here.
I wish you the best and hope that it does not actually get to your area. Just take care of the pugs.
Wow puggy! I don't know how you do it!
We're staying with friends, and they've taken a family from New Orleans under their wing. They said they've evacuated ten times!
They were able to visit thier house - total loss. Only things they got out were some knick knacks and trophies.
