Dickens on the Strand weekend

Last weekend was Dickens on the Strand, an annual Christmas festival when people dress in Victorian-era clothes, attend Victorian dinners and watch productions of Dickens' famous A Christmas Carol. Dickens' great great grandson, Mark Charles Dickens, flies across the pond each year to attend and read his ancestor's book aloud. I'm betting he also does a lot of wondering why all these Texans are pretending to be British for a weekend!

Emily and her boyfriend, Daniel, visited and went to the festival with us. They thought it was dumb to dress up - until they got there and everyone else was in costume. HA! Ok, not everyone, but lots of people. Mine was not so much a costume as it was my junior prom dress with a longsleeve mesh shirt and old lady shawl. Don't ask about my feathered hat - I had to improvise when Emily's attempt to make me a feathered hat turned more into a squashed chicken sculpture!

How crazy is this - we met Rascal's half sister at Dickens!!!
Her name is Lilly, and we saw her almost as soon as we walked in. Of course I went to pet her, got to talking to her parents, and figured out we both bought puppies from Linda McKee sired by Louie!

Doesn't Alan look dapper? (He's hiding my hot chocolate cup under his jacket because I said it looked ugly in the picture)

I found that suit at Goodwill for $15 and it fit pretty perfectly. He insisted on wearing the pants — GROSS!!!!

I guess people in Dickens' time watched people play with fire. This guy was good.

Even the moms (I assume they were their moms) were dressed as elves.

The newspaper is a sponsor of Dickens, so I got a VIP pass (one and only perk of working for the paper). This is Emily and me with Father Christmas in the VIP lounge. Father Christmas had a Diet Coke.

This is Dedra and me with Mark Charles Dickens and his son. A really drunk lady in the VIP room posed us. I was really trying not to fall over or openly laugh at her.

Back at home, Rascal and Gracie had a great time playing all weekend:

Emily's boyfriend is applying to medical schools, so Alan showed him around UTMB. This is in the entrance to one of the buildings - Ashbel Smith, aka "Old Red." The hallway is lined with sculptures of famous people in medical history:

Here's Andreas Vesalius, who apparently liked this skull.

Emily has a thing for statues, so she and I gave Mr. Smith a kiss.

Daniel wanted to see the dolphins from the ferry, so took a ride despite my vow never to ride it again (bad experience). Sure enough, there were dolphins playing all around us, but my zoom isn't good enough to get a clear picture.

I forget why I'm making that face - teeth chattering maybe?

Pretty sunset - yucky water

So much playing...so sleepy!

You both look fabulous in your costumes! I bet that was great fun. How cool that a Dickens joins the festivities! What a great town. Father Christmas drinks diet coke - lol.

You left out the part about Drunk Santa...we had so much fun. Thank you for being such great hosts. I really think Gracie needs a little brother now.

p.s. All the hat needed was more feathers...and a little bit more time.

You and Alan look SO cute in your picture! Looks like lots of fun!

My sister had a bad experience on a ferry in Galveston, too, involving seagull poop. We all thought it was very funny, except for her. Poor sister.
